UNIQUE LEARNERS Christ Community co-sponsors a Unique Learners Program for all grades with Lutheran Special Education Ministries. The program is under the direction of a licensed teacher who is an active member of the CCLS staff. Unique Learner sessions are specially designed for qualifying students demonstrating a need for remediation in core subject areas – or enrichment. Many qualifying students simply need an "action plan" and do not quite qualify for a special education "IEP." Unique Learners thrive on a different delivery system than what they receive in the larger classroom setting. They benefit from the extra attention away from the larger peer group for an average of two sessions per week. Regular classroom teachers initially refer students to the program and students are re-identified each year. The Unique Learners program offers several enrichment opportunities which are accessible to all learners at CCLS. Among the group enrichment opportunities are two book clubs which meet on selected Wednesday mornings before school, both including breakfast: Breakfast & Books for grades 5-8 and a new Mystery Book Club for grades 2-4. A third enrichment opportunity is the "Envirothon" team which involves 6th-8th graders delving into five environmental topics of study for several months in the winter/spring. The Envirothon culminates with a competition with other schools in May. TITLE ONE Although Title I service depends on a government allotment from year to year, CCLS is proud to offer this valuable math and reading reinforcement program for grades 1-4. Our Unique Learners teacher facilitates the Title I program. |
